DURNESS GOLF CLUB

The most North Westerly Course on mainland Britain

Monday 5th. May

Junior sessions started on Friday ! Alas as the children were being  transported from school we had a thunderstorm so for a lot of the session we were confined to the Clubhouse where we set up the indoor putting equipment and proceeded to practise. As the rain cleared we ventured to the putting green before it was time to go home. Mary McCowan, Lewis Arrowsmith and Campbell Morrison attended and Derek Morrison sent his apologies - he was heading for Manchester to watch Man U. play West Ham ! These are all potential golfers of the future and with such a small group should be able to get the attention to make progress more quickly. Martin Mackay, and Tony Jackson helped out and we were joined by Colin Mackay who was out on the course when the rain came on.

By Saturday, with the May weekend upon us there were more visitors about so the course had its busiest day of 2008.

Sunday was time for the May Medal but alas a rather strong wind spoilt things. Only 7 played and the best score was a Nett 74 from Francis Keith !

Memberships have been coming in regularly all week which is very promising.

The "Northern Counties Ladies" (who will be visiting Durness in July) held their County Championships in Brora over the weekend and making a name for herself was Hannah McCook who most of us will know from her annual visits in the summer. Hannah is now playing off 11 and qualified for the Scratch Knockout section where she disposed of two big names before succumbing to Mary Smith of Tain in the semi-final. Not a bad effort at all Hannah. Donna Mackinnon also made the journey to Brora on Sat. and her score of 92 just failed to qualify by 3 shots.

The Matchplay draw has now been made and the full list of games can be found on the noticeboard. Good luck to all participants !

To be continued next week !
